Homemade Valentine’s Day Classroom Cards: Color Your Heart Out!

Valentine’s Day is approaching, and nothing screams LOVE more than something handmade. If you’re still looking for a fun classroom card idea, here’s what we crafted up last year {my daughter just asked today if we could cook some more heart crayons!}…2016-01-25_23-59-55

What you will need:

  • Silicone Heart Mold (I love this one because the heart indention provides a nice grip for small hands)
  • 60 Crayons (new or used) to fill 12 heart molds
  • Card stock or printer paper if you have a laminator (this is the one I have)
  • Glue

The project actually calls for old broken crayon chunks, but since our collection wasn’t large enough, we supplemented with some new crayons too. E and O were in charge of peeling the paper and breaking the crayons. If your kids aren’t as into peeling crayons as mine were you can soak them in water and the wrappers will practically fall off.

I helped by breaking some of them up into smaller chunks.

We filled our heart shaped molds as full as they could be.

Placed the whole thing into the oven at 350°.

And watched the crayons slowly melt (maybe 8 min).

Before long, it was time to take them out (once the top becomes flat).

After they were cool we popped them out of the molds.

You can find my Valentine Printable here.

I used printer paper and ran it through my handy-dandy laminator; however, you could also use card stock.

I used a drop of hot glue to attach the crayons to each valentine. I’m sure regular glue would work too.

Voila! Heart-shaped crayons made with LOVE!
